Opening Day
Today is the opener in the Park. The Firehole is in good shape though it is coming up and has some color. The tea stained water has plenty of visibility though. Baetis have been hatching in the afternoons and we should see excellent insect activity this weekend. Make sure to pack a good emerger pattern, a dun and some unweighted nymphs to fish in the surface film. PMD hatches are a possibility as well, so make sure to have a few. Bring some soft hackles and Prince Nymphs for the mornings and expect to find rising fish in the afternoons.
The other rivers in the Park worth checking out today are the Madison and the Gibbon. The Madison has had some rising fish feeding on Baetis in the afternoons. Madison fish in the Park seem to rise in lower water than Firehole fish do. Firehole fish will come to the surface, so look for flat water and bubble lines when the bugs are out. Nymphs and streamers will also be effective on the Madison. Anglers heading to the Gibbon should expect to fish subsurface.
